Plain Language

Plain language means writing in words your audience can read, understand, and act on the first time they encounter them. It favors short sentences, familiar terms, and the active voice over jargon and acronyms.

Plain does not mean dumbed-down; it means respecting your reader's time. A sentence like "You may apply online" works better than "Applications may be submitted via the online portal." Keeping your reading level accessible is one of the most direct ways to reach more people.
