Operating System
An operating system is the foundational software a server runs. It is the lowest layer of the technology stack, with everything else built on top. Linux and Windows are the two you'll hear about most for web projects. The choice of OS ripples upward, influencing what your web server and content management system can run on and even what kind of hosting fits. For a lot of projects the decision is effectively made for you by the CMS you choose, which expects a particular operating system underneath.
