Competitive Analysis

Studying your competitors and peers to find gaps, confirm your own thinking, and spot opportunities you might have missed.

Competitive analysis is an exercise in research, and is not designed to "steal ideas." Rather, it's important to understand the scope of the industry before suggesting solutions, work that helps provide a mental model of the typical competitor.

In some industries, such as government or associations, we use the term "contemporary analysis," since the organization is comparing offices from other states or similarly run associations with no member overlap — groups that would not be seen as traditional "competitors."
